About In Darwin’s Footsteps

On the beach at Punta Carola

While working toward a graduate degree in Ecology, I had the opportunity to study for a month at the Galapagos Science Center on San Cristobal Island. By day I worked with research teams at the center studying sea turtles, sea urchins and sea lions. The evenings I spent with a delightful Galapagos family, who shared their home and their dinner table with me and baked a cake for my birthday. Accompanying me were two professors from the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics – Dr. Tony Frankino and Dr. Marc Hanke – and 11 other students. In Darwin’s Footsteps is a project that emerged from my time on the islands and my reading of Charles Darwin’s notebooks and his Voyage of the Beagle.
